Maharajpoor Star 1843 (Serjt. Charles Purcell H.M. 39th. Regt.) later ring and crudely riveted backstrap/ loop suspension, with bronzed but original silver centre, contact marks and bruised arm points, good fine £400-500

Charles Purcell was born at Temple Martin, Co. Cork and enlisted in the 39th Foot in March 1826, aged 20 years. In his subsequent career of 20 years with the Colours, he served for over five years in New South Wales, in addition to participating in the capture of Coorg in 1837 and the Battle of Maharajpoor in 1843, when he was wounded ‘in the left thumb by a tulwar and had it afterwards amputated’. Purcell, whose advancement to Sergeant dated to March 1841, was discharged in November 1846.
