Samson Peebles was born in Glasgow in 1820 and attested for the 26th (Cameronian) Regiment of Foot at Glasgow on 16 January 1840. He served with the Regiment in China, and after several spells of imprisonment for habitual drunkenness was discharged on 1 July 1862 after 21 years and 25 days’ service, his discharge papers noting that ‘his conduct has been bad.’
