Reginald Lester Furness was a well known champion revolver shot, who represented Rhodesia at Bisley in 1907. He served during the Great War with the British South Africa Police, and helped form the latter’s Mechanical Transport Company. He later commanded the company, which first saw service in Northern Rhodesia and then transferred via Beira to Nyasaland and German East Africa. He retired with the rank of Captain, before re-engaging for service with the outbreak of the Second War.

Furness served in the Police Reserve as a 1st Class Sergeant, May 1940 - January 1947.
