Three: Private S. Todd, Gordon Highlanders, killed in action on the attack on High Wood during the Battle of the Somme, 20 July 1916

Samuel Todd was born at Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, and enlisted at Wishaw. He served with the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders during the Great War in France from 31 March 1915, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 20 July 1916, on which date the Battalion was involved in the attack on High Wood. The 2nd Gordons advanced at 3:25am taking the first objective, and then moved onto the second objective, where they were met with heavy fire from machine guns hidden in standing crops, and from High Wood which took the Battalion in the rear, which forced them to retreat, with total casualties of 262 officers or men killed or wounded. Todd’s body was recovered from the battlefield and he is buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Somme, France.
