Three: Sergeant H. Crawford, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, died of wounds on the Western Front 10 November 1915

Hugh Crawford was born in Peebles in 1873 and attested for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at Edinburgh on 30 May 1894. Posted to the 1st Battalion, he transferred to the 2nd Battalion on 12 December 1895 and served with them in India from that date until 26 October 1906. He took part in the operations on the North West Frontier with the Tochi Field Force under Major-General Sir G. Corrie Bird, 10 June 1897 to 6 April 1898, before being discharged on 30 October 1906 after 12 years and 154 days’ service. Subsequently employed with the Caledonian Railway, he re-joined his old regiment on 2 September 1914 on the outbreak of the Great War, and was advanced to Sergeant on 17 October 1914. He served in France with the 11th (Service) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders from 9 July 1915, and died from injuries received by a gun shot wound to the head whilst burying a fellow comrade on the Western Front on 10 November 1915, and is buried in Lillers Communal Cemetery, France.
