George Davis was born in Manchester in 1862 and attested for the Army Service Corps at Aldershot on 4 December 1880. He served with the Corps in Egypt from 27 July until 24 October 1882, and in the Sudan from 25 August 1884 until 5 July 1886, where he took part in the expedition to relieve General Gordon in Khartoum, and was present at the action at Kirbekan, 10 February 1885. Promoted Corporal, 11 April 1885; Sergeant, 11 December 1888; and Company Quartermaster Sergeant, 19 August 1891, he suffered concussion to the brain on 9 July 1896, after he was involved in a bicycle accident (the medical report stating that he ‘had the appearance as if he was suffering from alcoholism, and the accident may affect his future efficiency’), but he recovered sufficiently to be awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in April 1899, before being discharged on 3 June 1899, after 18 years and 182 days’ service.
