William Larman was born on 30 December 1856 and attested for the 74th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot at London on 29 December 1871. He served as a Bandsman with the Highland Light Infantry in Egypt from 8 August 1882 until 18 February 1883, and took part in the night march from Kassassin and the subsequent assault on Tel-el-Kebir, 13 September 1882. Upon returning to England he transferred to the Royal West Kent Regiment as a Drummer, 15 December 1883, and was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal April 1890, before being finally discharged on 12 May 1894, after 22 years and 134 days’ service.
