Robert White was born in Brancaster, Norfolk, in 1851 and attested for the Coldstream Guards at Westminster on 3 June 1870. He served with the Regiment in Egypt from 1 August until 16 November 1882, and took part in the night march from Kassassin and the subsequent assault on Tel-el-Kebir, 13 September 1882. He was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity of £5, in October 1888, before he was finally discharged on 29 June 1891, after 21 years and 27 days’ service.
