Pair: Lance-Corporal J. Arnott, King’s Own Borderers, late 64th Foot

James Arnott was born in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, in 1848 and attested for the 64th (2nd Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot at Westminster on 18 December 1868, having previously served in the Hertfordshire Militia. Transferring to the 6th Infantry Brigade on 1 October 1875, he was posted to the 25th (King’s Own Borderers) Regiment of Foot, and immediately sailed out to India to join his new Regiment. Promoted Lance-Corporal on 21 October 1882, he returned home from India in March 1887, and was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in August 1887. Posted out to Egypt, he was present on operations in the eastern Sudan from 3 December 1888, including the battle of Gemaizah on 20 December 1888 (entitled to medal with clasp and Khedive’s Star). Returning home, he was discharged on 14 January 1890, after 21 years and 28 days’ service.
