Arthur George Gamble was born in Manchester in 1884, and attested for the Scots Guards at Horse Guards on 21 August 1899. Appointed a Drummer on 22 January 1900, he was promoted Corporal on 5 October 1908, and Sergeant-Drummer on 21 February 1911. He served during the Great War with the British Expeditionary Force in France continuously from 13 August 1914 until 14 October 1918, and then from 30 October 1918 until 11 March 1919. He was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with a Gratuity on 20 November 1919, and was finally discharged on 23 August 1920.
