Charles Edward Couchman was born in London in April 1882 and attested for the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on 16 April 1896. Appointed a Drummer on 5 November 1898, he served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa from 5 November 1899 until 8 February 1903, and was mentioned in Lord Roberts’ Despatch of 4 September 1901 for having ‘rendered special and meritorious service’ (London Gazette 10 September 1901). Appointed Lance Corporal on 4 March 1907, he was discharged on 15 April 1908, after 12 years’ service, and the following month attested for the Army Reserve. Called up on the outbreak of the Great War, he served with the 2nd Battalion in France, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 25 September 1917, and is buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.
