Robert Ernest Young was born in Alderney, Channel Islands, in 1872 and attested for the Cheshire Regiment at Bedford on 4 June 1887. Appointed a Drummer on I August 1889, and a Bandsman on 6 May 1896, he served with the Regiment in South Africa from 7 January 1900 until 26 October 1902, and was promoted Sergeant-Drummer on 14 August 1902. Awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 30 October 1905, he was discharged on 3 June 1908, after 21 years’ service.
