Samuel Richard Baulch was born at Shorncliffe, Kent, in 1864 and attested for the Grenadier Guards on 4 February 1878. Promoted Drummer, 3 April 1881, he served with the Regiment in Egypt and the Sudan, 20 February to 10 September 1885, and took part in the operations at Suakin, 1 March to 14 May (entitled to Egypt and Sudan Medal with clasp Suakin 1885 and Khedive’s Star). He was discharged on 20 July 1886, after 8 years and 35 days’ service, and re-enlisted in the Royal Scots on 8 August 1888. Promoted Sergeant on 4 October 1893, he served with the 3rd Battalion in South Africa from 3 March 1900 until 20 August 1901, and was discharged for a second time on 23 August 1901, after a further 13 years and 16 days’ service.
