William David Thomas was commissioned in the Welsh Horse in January 1915, in which unit he was serving as a Sergeant. He subsequently entered the Egyptian theatre of war as a Lieutenant in the 1/1Welsh Horse, attached Remounts Service, in January 1917. The regiment was amalgamated with the 1/1 Montgomeryshire Yeomanry to form the 25th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, in March of the same year and moved to the Western Front in May 1918.
