Horatio John Parkhurst, Snr., was appointed Quarter-Master in the 2nd Monmouthshire Rifle Volunteer Corps in December 1875. He subsequently transferred to the 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion, South Wales Borderers as a Q.M. & Hon. Captain in February 1888, and resigned his commission in March 1892, the same year in which he was awarded the Volunteer Decoration (London Gazette 6 December 1892, refers).

Horatio John Parkhurst, Jnr., who was born in October 1867, served for 12 years in the 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion, South Wales Borderers and was discharged in the rank of Sergeant. He subsequently applied for a temporary commission in September 1914, aged 47 years, and was appointed a Captain in the 10th Battalion, Welsh Regiment. It was in this capacity that he went to France in July 1916. Later still, he served as a Major in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and as Assistant Commandant of the P.O.W. camp for officers at Skipton, Yorkshire. He died in January 1926; sold with copied research.
