A 19th century cameo brooch, the oval shell cameo carved to depict ‘Phoebus and his Horses’, the naked winged god, with armour, shield and torched tossed aside, reigning in three rearing horses, collet set within an openwork and ropetwist frame, cameo measures 39 x 30mm, brooch width 46mm. £150-200

The subject Phoebus and his horses is after a cameo by Tommaso Saulini, illustrated in Malcom Stuart Carr’s article ‘Tommaso and Luigi Saulini’ in The Connoisseur, November 1975. The subject was also depicted in a painting by Begigne Gagnerax, in 1791, entitled Peace Halting the Horses of Mars.
