British South Africa Company Medal 1890-97, reverse undated, 3 clasps, Mashonaland 1890, Rhodesia 1896, Mashonaland 1897 (Sgt: Butler, H. - B.S.A.C.P.) official correction to rank, otherwise nearly extremely fine £1000-1200

Note: Not entitled to the last two clasps.

Henry Butler was a Cape Town man who attested on 4 January 1890 and served in “E” Troop. A group photograph taken at Macloutsie Camp in 1890 shows him standing outside the corporal’s mess between two burly companions; a slight figure with a light moustache, he is wearing a smasher hat and greyback shirt. He was in charge of one of the helio stations near Semalale, and was promoted Sergeant in “E: Troop on 1 June 1891 and employed as a signalling sergeant. Although he is shown on some published rolls for the clasps Rhodesia 1896 and Mashonaland 1897, they actually refer to another man of the same name who served in the Salisbury Field Force and B.S.A. Police and was awarded the 1896 medal and 1897 clasp.
