Michael Long Barrett was the son of Dr. and Mrs. S. E. Barrett. Educated at Bedford School and Sandhurst, he entered the Indian Army in 1915, being attached to Queen Victoria’s Own Corps of Guides (Frontier Force) (Lumsden’s) (London Gazette 19 May 1916). With them he saw service in Mesopotamia both during and after the war. Whilst serving there he contracted an illness which obliged him to retire on 15 June 1928 (London Gazette 20 July 1928). He died in Tillingham, aged 36 years and was buried in St. Nicholas’ Churchyard with full military honours - the firing party being provided by the Middlesex Regiment from the Colchester Garrison.
