Charles Edward Herling was born in and enlisted at Manchester. Serving with the 1/8th Battalion Manchester Regiment, he entered the Egyptian theatre of war on 25 September 1914. He then served in Gallipoli where he died of wounds on 30 May 1915. His name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
