Lionel Kekewich Carlyon was born in London on 22 October 1867. From the Royal Military College he was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the North Staffordshire Regiment, 23 March 1889. Prior to the Boer War, he served in Natal, Mauritius, and India. During the Boer War he served in the Orange Free State, February-May 1900, seeing action at Karee Siding, Vet River and Zand River. Also served in the Transvaal and operations including Johannesburg, May 1900; operations in Transvaal, November 1900-May 1902. Mentioned in Lord Robert’s despatches (London Gazette 10 September 1901) and granted the Brevet of Major (London Gazette 27 September 1901). Appointed to that rank in September 1906 (London Gazette 4 September 1906). Major Carlyon retired in March 1908 (London Gazette 27 March 1908). With the onset of war and serving in the Reserve of Officers, he was appointed Railway Transport Officer (London Gazette 23 September 1914). Listed as entering the France/Flanders theatre of war on 23 September 1914. Appointed Assistant Embarkation Staff Officer (London Gazette 16 August 1915). Appointed to Army Ordnance Department, December 1915. Mentioned in French’s despatches (London Gazette 1 January 1916). Discharged to the Reserve List on 4 August 1916.
