William Honan was born in Glenmire, Co. Cork on 6 March 1864. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 21 September 1879 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in September 1880 and Ordinary Seaman in March 1882. Served on H.M.S. Hecla, May 1882-September 1885, being promoted to Able Seaman in November 1883. Promoted to Leading Seaman in July 1889 and to Petty Officer 2nd Class in May 1890. Allowed to purchase his discharge on 12 December 1891 for the purpose of entering the Mexican Navy. With copied service paper.
