D.S.M. London Gazette 23 May 1917. ‘... in recognition of their services in Destroyer Patrol Flotillas, Armed Boarding Steamers, etc., during the period which ended on the 30th September 1916.’

John Bryant was born in Ivybridge, Devon on 18 July 1879. A Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 19 November 1900. He was confirmed in that rank in February 1902 when at Vivid and promoted to E.R.A. 3rd Class in November 1903 when on H.M.S. Melampus; E.R.A. 2nd Class in February 1908 when at Sapphire II; and Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class in October 1912 when on H.M.S. Prometheus. He served on H.M.T.B. 22, April 1913-June 1919, being awarded the L.S. & G.C. in December 1915; and attaining the rank of C.E.R.A. 1st Class in October 1917. For his services aboard the vessel during 1915-16, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. Discharged to a pension on 18 November 1922. With copied service papers and gazette extracts.
