Royal Red Cross, 2nd Class (A.R.R.C.), G.V.R., silver and enamel, unnamed, on ribbon bow; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, no clasp (Nursing Sister E. C. R. Philip); King’s South Africa 1901-02, no clasp (Nursing Sister E. C. R. Philip) the last with test mark to edge, otherwise good very fine (3) £650-750

A.R.R.C. London Gazette 3 June 1918: ‘Miss Elsie Christian Philip, Matron, Northern Infirmary, Inverness.’

Elsie Christian Russel Philip was born at Largo, Fife, on 24 January 1864. She trained at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh and entered the P.C.A.N.S.R. as number ‘340’ on 23 February 1900. In South Africa she served at No. 1 General Hospital and later at the Stationary Hospital at Aliwal North. During the Great War she served as Matron at the Northern Infirmary, Inverness, for which work she received the A.R.R.C. Matron Elsie Philip died in Fife on 14 March 1950, aged 86.
