Seven: Able Seaman E. P. Ashworth, Royal Navy

1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star, clasp, France and Germany; Burma Star; War Medal 1939-45, M.I.D. Oakleaf; Korea (P / JX 382335 A.B., R.N.); U.N. Korea; France, Croix de Guerre 1939, mounted for wear, good very fine (7) £500-600

M.I.D. and Croix de Guerre, awarded to A.B. Edward Purvis Ashworth, R.N., H.M. L.C.T. 717, as a part of Assault Force ‘J’ in Operation ‘Neptune’ and ‘Dragoon’. Ashworth was granted unrestricted ‘permission to wear’ the Croix de Guerre on 29.9.1945. His Croix de Guerre recommendation reads: ‘On the beach at Courseulles during the initial assault the engine room of H.M. L.C.T. 717 sustained almost simultaneous hits by shell fire and a mine. Able Seaman Ashworth, at great personal risk and on his own initiative, fought his way through the smoke and fumes in an attempt to rescue the engine room staff. Unfortunately his mission was unsuccessful, as the two ratings had been killed instantly, but his action was nevertheless a very brave one’.

Sold with copied Admiralty papers relating to the above.
