Colonel Sir Charles Bean Euan-Smith, was born in 1842 and entered the Indian Army in 1859. He attained the rank of Colonel in 1885 and retired in the following year. During the course of his military career, he served in the Abyssinian War in 1867, was military attaché with Sir Bartle Frere’s mission to Zanzibar in 1872 and served in the Afghan War of 1878-80. He was Consul-General in Zanzibar during 1887-91, was Minister at Tangiers during 1891-93 and Minister Resident at Bogota during 1898-99. In 1872 he was created a C.S.I. and in 1890 a K.C.B. He was a member of the Garrick, United Services and Cosmopolitan Clubs. He died in 1910.
