Frederick Augustus Nellthorp was born in Portsmouth in August 1883 and joined the Royal Navy in November 1901. Appointed an Acting Ship’s Steward in March 1911 and advanced to Ship’s Steward in July of the following year, he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal while serving in the torpedo gunboat H.M.S. Spanker in January 1917. Other than his time aboard the latter ship between January 1914 and September 1917, Nellthorp’s wartime career included service with the Seahorse between November 1917 until April 1919. He was pensioned ashore as a Victualling Chief Petty Officer in November 1923.
