Richard Taylor was appointed Quarter Master on 29 March 1839 and served with the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade, in the second Kaffir War of 1846-47. He was placed on half-pay on 21 August 1849. The medal rolls, however, also credit him with service in the third Kaffir War of 1850-53 and this may have been in his capacity as Paymaster of the local Levies, hence the additional naming detail on his medal.
