Three: Sub-Lieutenant J. F. Belville, Fleet Air Arm

Naval General Service 1915-62
, 1 clasp, Malaya, G.VI.R. (S/Lt., R.N.); Korea 1950-53 (S. Lt., R.N.); U.N. Korea, good very fine (3) £400-500

Sub-Lieutenant Jeremy Belville, an Old Etonian (1946-50), entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet in 1950, becoming a Midshipman in 1951 and an Acting Sub-Lieutenant in 1952. He joined 801 Squadron straight from Operational Flying School and with the squadron served as a Pilot aboard the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Glory in active service in the waters off Korea (10.9.1952 - 23.5.1953). Flying Sea Furies, on one occasion he was forced to make an emergency landing on a beach at Pengyong (8.2.1953). After Korea, he served at H.M.S. Fulmar (R.N.A.S. Lossiemouth, Scotland) during 1954 and H.M.S. Blackcap (R.N.A.S. Stretton, Cheshire) during 1955, after which he resigned his commission.

After service with the Royal Navy, Belville, of considerable private means and with connections to the wealthy Colman ‘Mustard’ family, entered Lloyd’s of London as an underwriter. An anecdote from his days as a trainee pilot has him reassuring his C.O. after one particular scrape when he placed his valuable aircraft in danger, that, ‘I wouldn’t worry about that sir - my grandmother would have bought you a new one’. Leading a rather ‘fast’ lifestyle, he died on 20.8.1962, drowned, after falling overboard from his boat following a party. Sold with many letters concerning the life and service of the recipient.
