Three: Corporal S. Plummer, Monmouthshire Regiment, killed in action on 29 December 1915

1914-15 Star (2913 Pte., Monmouth R.); British War and Victory Medals (2913 Cpl., Monmouth R.) good very fine (3) £80-100

Stanley Plummer was born at Abergavennyand lived at Newtown, Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire. He was killed in action in France and Flanders on 29 December 1915 whilst serving with the 3rd Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment.

The following is extracted from the published battalion history: ‘On December 29th the battalion saw its second greatest tragedy. Orders had been issued to parade ready for moving off at 2:30 p.m. Evidently the enemy were aware from the amount of traffic on the roads that a Divisional relief was taking place. At 2:10 p.m. a heavy “woolly bear” burst nearly over the chateau, evidently a ranging shot. The companies were then beginning to fall in and everyone was in a particularly cheery mood at the prospect of six weeks rest. A few minutes later, an ominous sound was heard, like an oncoming railway train, and in about eight seconds a 17 inch shell, fired from a naval gun in the Forest of Houthulst, burst right in between “B” and “C” Companies; in about five minutes a second shell burst near the same spot. The third shell completely demolished the Church Army Hut which had only been completed three days earlier, and a fourth fell near the “Pagoda”... Thirty nine N.C.O’s. and men were killed and are buried on the adjoining Cemetery of Ferme Olivier.’
