Five: Chief Steward G. V. Bathe, Merchant Navy, late Marine Fleet Auxiliary

George Victor Bathe served as Chief Steward in the Marine Fleet Auxiliary during the Great War. In the Second World War, as Barkeeper aboard Elders & Fyffes liner S.S. Carare he was killed in action on 28.5.1940 when the ship struck a magnetic mine near Foreland Point in the Bristol Channel. The ship was en-route from Avonmouth to Jamaica and Colombia; seven of her crew and three passengers were killed in the action. Bathe, who died age 57 years, is commemorated in Filton Churchyard, Gloucestershire.
