John Smith Harland was born in Moffat in Dumfriesshire and enlisted into the Army in 1889, aged 18 years 8 months. He served with the Cameron Highlanders until 1897 when he transferred to the Army Reserve after completing his period of service. He then rejoined the colours in 1899 and served with the regiment in South Africa until 1902. Sold with copied service papers.
