Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal (5544 Pte., 2/R.W. Kent Regt.), edge bruising; King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps (5544 Pte., Rl. W. Kent Regt.), initial ‘C’ on this medal; British War and Victory Medals (3-5544 A.W.O. Cl. I, R.W. Kent R.); India General Service 1908-35, 1 clasp, Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919 (49169 W.O. I, North’d. Fus.); Imperial Service Medal, G.VI.R. 1st type (Ernest Frederick Fitzgerald), sold with two Masonic medals, silver-gilt and enamel, unnamed and an unofficial Jubilee 1887 and 1897, bronze, very fine and better (10) £160-200

Sold with a quantity of original papers, including the recipient’s Soldier’s Small Book; Certificate of Character, 1907; letter of Character Reference, 1907; Reserve Certificate, 1907; Discharge Certificate and Character Certificate, 1920; Certificates of Education, 1904; retirement card of appreciation from the Home Guard. Also sold with a number of photographs including some of the recipient in uniform wearing medals and others of scenes from Iraq.

Ernest Fitzgerald was born in the Parish of Westminster and attested in 1899 for the Royal West Kent Regiment at the age of 18 years 11 months. After serving in the Boer war he transferred to the Army Reserve in 1907. Returning to the Colours for the Great War, he served in Iraq and was promoted Warrant Officer Class II in 1917. Transferring to the Northumberland Fusiliers and serving in India, he was promoted Warrant Officer Class I in 1918 and was discharged in 1920. During the Second World War he was a member of the Borough of Twickenham Voluntary Fire Fighting Party and a member of the 2nd Middlesex Battalion Home Guard.
