Toran Shumshere Jung Bahadur Rana was commissioned into the Royal Nepalese Army in 1920. With the outbreak of the Second World War he held the rank of Colonel and commanded eight battalions that were sent to India with the onset of hostilities. He served in the Assam-Burma Campaign and was one of 50 men to receive the Assam-Burma Gallantry Medal (Bahaduree Padaka). With the end of the War Colonel Toran as Commander of the Shree Nath Regiment was awarded the C.B.E. by the British Government. In the post-war years, Toran survived political turmoil and intrigue, including a charge of treason, to emerge as Chief of the Army Staff in 1956. He retired from this post in 1960 and died in 1999. Sold with copied service details and a photograph of the recipient in uniform wearing orders and medals.
