South Africa 1834-53 (Captain J. W. Dimond), with silver buckle on ribbon, nearly extremely fine £100-120

John Woods Dimond was born in Bath in 1833 and entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet aboard H.M.S. Vengeance in 1848. He was appointed Midshipman on H.M.S. Fox in June 1850 and thence the Hermes in December 1850. He received the South Africa Medal for service in the Third Kaffir War during 1851. He was discharged from the senior service in 1851 and in 1853 was commissioned into the Army as an Ensign in the 50th Foot, attaining the rank of Captain in 1855.
