Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 2 clasps, Delhi, Lucknow (Bt. Captn. R. W. Chambers, 4th Sikh Infy.) second clasp loose as apparently issued and stitched to the ribbon, clearly as worn, one or two edge bruises and a little polished, otherwise very fine and better £350-400

Richard Wellesley Chambers was appointed Ensign in 11th Native Infantry on 12 June 1841, and was promoted Lieutenant on 27 March 1846. He served with the Army of the Sutlej in that year and was subsequently present at the siege of Kot Kangra under General Wheeler in May and June 1846. Some references state that he was entitled to the Sutlej Medal but as he does not appear to have been present in any of the qualifying actions, nor does he mention a medal in his own statement of services, it seem unlikely.

When his regiment mutinied at Meerut in May 1857, he proceeded with the force under General Sir A. Wilson from Meerut to Delhi, as Orderley Officer to Lieutenant-Colonel Custance, commanding 6th Carbineers. He took part in the two actions on the Hindun, 30th and 31st May, and in the action at Badlee-ki-Serai on 8th June, with the Carbineers. He served with the 4th Sikh Infantry, as second-in-command, at the siege of Delhi, from 15 June to 20 September 1857. In December 1857 he joined the 1st Sikh Cavalry, under Major Wale, and proceeded to Cawnpore, being appointed, in January 1858, Commissariat Officer to the European Engineer Brigade at Lucknow (Medal and clasps for Delhi and Lucknow).

After the capture of Lucknow he was appointed Superintendant of District Police and retained that appointment until 15 February 1859, when he proceeded to England on Medical Certificate. Returning in February 1861 and was promoted Major on 12 June of that year. In 1865 he served under General Sir S. Corbett at Benares, as Assistant Quarter Master General, and later commanded at Chunar. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in June 1867, to Colonel in June 1872, and retired as a Major-General on 5 June 1875. Sold with full research.
