Sold with twelve pages of research detail copied from his P.R.O. correspondence file, the following being extracted from a letter written by the recipient to the War Office in January 1916: ‘I beg to claim a wound gratuity for wounds received in action on August 7th 1915 at Cape Helles [Gallipoli]. I received gun-shot wounds in knee, calf of right leg and in the back. Gangrene set in the right leg which neccessitated the total loss of right leg, amputated on board H.M.H.S. Caledonia, August 8th 1915.’
