Mark Tew was born at Shalston, Buckinghamshire, in 1851, and enlisted into the 4th Hussars with whom he served for 12 years. He joined the Metropolitan Police on 11 June 1883, retired in June 1908, and was recalled for the 1911 Coronation. His son, Ernest A. Tew, also joined the Metropolitan Police in December 1914 but joined the Army in January 1917 and was killed in action on the Western Front.
