Thomas Knight joined the Metropolitan Police on 12 April 1909 as a Constable in “P” Division. He was one of the 398 naval reservists called up from the Met in August 1914 on the outbreak of hostilities. He was present aboard H.M.S. Good Hope at the battle of Coronel, off the coast of Chile, on 1 November 1914. At 7.53 p.m. the ship, on fire in several places and with her main armament destroyed, blew up killing Admiral Cradock and her crew of some 900 officers and men.
