George William Mitchell was born at Bermondsey, London, on 20 April 1878. He joined the Metropolitan Police on 3 May 1905, after 8 years and 8 months Army service, and was recalled for Army service from December 1915 until April 1919. He retired on pension on 1 June 1930.
