Robert Popplewell Steer was born in about 1781, the son of Richard Ryder Popplewell Steer, of Axholme in Yorkshire. He was granted a commission as an Ensign in the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot on 16 August 1799, and was promoted to Lieutenant in the regiment on 12 June 1800. He served with the regiment in the campaign in Egypt in 1801 under Sir Ralph Abercromby. The 58th Foot disembarked in Egypt under a heavy fire on 8 March 1801, and later took part in the action at Alexandria on 21 March. Lieutenant Steer retired by the sale of his commission on 30 June 1804, and died on 28 September 1826, aged 45. Sold with further genealogical research.
