Sergeant (Glider Pilot) James Albert Arthur Bennett was killed on 9 July 1943, during the airborne phase of the invasion of Sicily. A number of gliders were flown in to capture important bridges vital to Montgomery’s plan. The majority of these gliders were released early by their tug aircraft and ended up in the sea resulting in the death of many of the glider pilots.
