The campaign group of six awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel D. A. Fairbairn, O.B.E., West Riding Regiment and 9th Sudanese Infantry, who commanded the Zeraf Expedition 1913-14 and served in East Africa 1915
Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, S.A. 1901, S.A. 1902 (2/Lieut., W. Rid. Rgt.); Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, East Africa 1915 (Major, 9/Sud.R.); British War and Victory Medals (Lt.Col.) these officially re-impressed; Khedive’s Sudan 1910-21, 2nd issue, no clasp but entitled to Zeraf 1913-14, unnamed; Order of the Nile, breast badge in silver, gilt and enamels, contained in its J. Lattes case of issue with rosette but lacking ribbon, good very fine or better (6)

This officer served in South Africa and was present in the operations in the Transvaal, October 1901 to 31 May 1902 (Queen’s medal and 5 clasps). He commanded the operations in the Zeraf Valley, December 1913 to June 1914 (Sudan medal and clasp, issued direct by G.O.C. British Troops in Egypt - 7 British officers and 2 NCOs received this clasp). On 21 September 1914 he left Mongalla with a detachment of one and a half companies of the IXth Sudanese and co-operated with the Uganda troops in the operations against the Turkhana tribe on the shores of Lake Rudolf in April and May 1915 (Africa medal with clasp). He served in Egypt from September to November 1915; and in France from April to September 1917, during which period he briefly commended the 9th (Service) Bn. West Riding Regiment, 1 July to 14 July 1917. He was awarded the O.B.E. for his services during the Great War.
