Sergeant Hoyles was one of 25 men of the Devons who served with the Ashanti Expedition as part of the Special Service Corps. All were specially selected as being good shots. The lot is sold with a copy photograph showing Holmes as a member of the regiment’s King’s Cup Shooting Team at Devonport in 1907, wearing, in addition to the two above, two Boer War medals and another for long service.
