Lieutenant-Colonel Gerrald Rickards Hughes was born in 1882. Commissioned into the West India Regiment in 1901, he became a Lieutenant in the Indian Army in 1904. In the Great War he served in Egypt between November 1914 and March 1916. Promoted Major in May 1916, he served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force between March 1916 to September 1918 and was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette, 6.7.1917) whilst serving with the Gwalior Infantry.
