William Thomas Gell was born on 20 December 1866. He served in China in 1900 with the Military Works Service, Madras, and was made Sub-Conductor on 1 December 1901, becoming Conductor on 30 September 1907. The Indian Army List of 1913 shows him as Honorary Lieutenant.
