Maj., 10/Hussars); Meritorious Service Medal, G.V.R., coinage head (Sjt. Mjr., 10-Hrs.); Khedive’s Star 1884 (1708 Corpl., 10th Rl. Hussars) the first with minor official correction and severely pitted and worn from star, otherwise nearly very fine or better (6) £400-500

George Honess was born in the Parish of Ospringe, Faversham, Kent, on 28 October 1859 and enlisted into the 10th Hussars at Canterbury on 28 October 1879. He was promoted to Corporal on 28 April 1883; Sergeant, 3 October 1884; Troop Sergeant Major, 26 July 1889; and to Regimental Sergeant Major on 26 October 1891. He served in the Soudan campaign of 1884, including the battles of El-Teb and Tamaai, and in the South African War of 1899-1902. Regimental Sergeant-Major Honess retired on 23 May 1903 and received his Meritorious Service Medal in 1935. Sold with copy discharge papers and a regimental group photograph of Honess with the Sergeant-Majors and Sergeants of the 10th Hussars. See Lot 1472 for the medals awarded to his son.
