Raymond Charles Arthur Barnes was the son of Charles Frederick and Ellen Matilda Barnes, of Banstead, Surrey. He was serving on H.M.S. Tormentor, the shore establishment at Warsash that was Combined Operation Command’s principal landing craft training base, and was killed in action on 19 August 1942 whilst in charge of a motor launch or landing craft in the raid on Dieppe. He is commemorated by name on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
