Sergeant-Major John Morrison was born at Chatham, Kent and enlisted locally in the Royal Marines as a Drummer Boy in July 1829, aged 11 years. Advanced to Sergeant in June 1840, while serving in H.M.S. Vesuvius, he participated in the Syria operations of the same year, and was further advanced to Colour-Sergeant on his return to Chatham in late 1844. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1858, in the rank of Sergeant-Major, Morrison gained the additional distinction of an M.S.M. in June 1866, the recommendation possibly reflecting earlier ‘distinguished service in action’ (see Douglas-Morris). He was finally discharged in April 1868.
