William Lyne was born at St. Clears, Cornwall and joined the Royal Navy as a Landsman aboard H.M.S. Ramillies in May 1827. Advanced to Ordinary Seaman in March 1830 and to Able Seaman in June 1833, he gained Petty Officer status with his appointment to Captain of the Fore’castle aboard the Madagasgar in late 1841. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in November 1848, Lyne went on to witness active service in the Baltic operations of 1854-55 while aboard the St. George. He was finally pensioned ashore in October 1860, having latterly reverted to the rate of Able Seaman.
