Alfred John Broom was born at Stonehouse, Devon, on 20 September 1860, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 19 March 1877. He was invalided out at a Petty Officer 1st Class on 21 January 1897, having briefly held the appointment of Acting Chief Gunner. Sold with copy service record which notes ‘marks of wounds on legs’ but gives no further details.
